MOODBOARDS BASED ON THE WORD "NAKED"

The first moodboard I created was more of a mind-map. In class we were given a word in which we have to incorporate in to our photoshoots. My word was NAKED. I first began by researching naked which came up with the obvious "without clothes". I didn't want to be so vague with my ideas so I researched further into the word and found different definitions and ideas for the word naked which I then made into separate visual moodboards below.
The first thing I researched into was colour. The obvious, The Naked Palettes by Urban Decay, came up and as you can see by the colour of the eyeshadows - they are all nude and natural colours. Alot of the colours that came up for 'naked colours' were mainly nudes, browns and pastels. This is something I may want to look into when taking my shoots. I noticed that most of the 'nude' colours in the colour wheel were in one section - this made me want to venture out and use other colours that may support the word naked.

The second point I researched into was body paint and body art. As you can see by the images above, I chose to include more facial paint than body paint. All of the models in these images are naked or at least look naked in the images which helps to support my word. I particularly like the images down the right side because they are more natural than the rest. However, I like the use of glitter and the way it actually hides the fact the models are naked.

The third part I looked into was Body parts. The images above help to support the idea of naked because they are all of the body and arent wearing any clothing. The image in the top right could be interesting to look into because it shows a sense of a natural body vs how people want their bodys. I like the way an artist has used coffee to decorate the naked skin in another image and how in some images indents of the skin from clothes have been shown to show nakedness. I like the idea of looking into sculptures because the body is portrayed in a different way and the materials and colours used help me to get ideas for shoots.

The forth idea was disguise. I first looked at photoshopped and edited images that weren't physically captured to hide the face and body. I liked the use of black and white against colour images and the way naked is portrayed through them. Paint was also used to disguise the face and made it almost portrait like. I looked into masks and ways of hiding the face, which could be interesting to incorporate because like the model in the image - it may be the only thing the model is wearing. Similarly to the masks, I looked into costume and how costume is used to create a whole other personal. I also looked at my favourite photography Charlotte Carol because she disguises the face by using animals. And finally I came across an image from an Illamasqua campaign, which reminded me of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland and also reminded me of fantasy and fictional characters that could be used.

The next topic i looked at came from one of the descriptions of the word 'Naked'. It was a 'devoid of vegetation'. At first I didn't know what this meant so I searched it into google images and it came up with images of deserts and empty places with ironically no vegetation. These images reminded me of heat so I have included an image of the sun, which then moved my mind on to the colours that are included with in heat. I found the top image and it immediately reminded me of this description of naked due to the model being in what looks like a land devoid of vegetation and she looks as though she is in an area of heat with the lack of clothing and makeup.

The sixth section I looked at was 'The naked eye'. The description of the naked eye suggested that is what what we physically see without any equipment. However, I thought this idea was very basic so looked at the opposite and looked at galaxies and the colours and ways they are portrayed. The stars in a galaxy look almost like glitter so I came up with the idea of giving my model and glittery look, maybe on the lips or under the eye. I also found a book by Charles Satchi which is about the Naked eye and included examples of that in this moodboard.

The next thing is almost the complete opposite to naked. It's Drag and Drag Queens. However, i didnt think it was appropriate to dress my model in complete drag so instead could focus on a more natural version of drag. I looked into the Viva Glam campaign with Ru Paul and also looked into other work involving her. I looked at barbies also because they remind me of drag makeup and I personally think that they inspire the drag look. I looked at more natural versions of drag, focusing on excessing maybe one area of the face instead of every area, so the eyelashes for example or the hair.

I then found a definition of naked that was 'exposed to harm'. This firstly reminded me of self harm, but i didn't think it was appropriate to be showing self harm in my own beauty campaign, so instead included images that may link to self harm like hiding the face, or the position of the body, or the makeup (tears). I searched exposed and it came up with some strange interior design which gave me different ideas for makeup so i wanted to include that. Barbie also came up again and so did the idea of the perfect body.

The final idea I came up with was all about the obvious, Naked model. I looked at ways the models hide the face they're naked so by wearing one item of clothing such as a coat, or hiding their features in different positions. I looked into the types of models that get naked in shoots and the most common models were Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian. I wont be shooting my models as naked as Kim K and Kate are but I wanted to maybe express the naked idea in my shoots. Although, linking back to my idea of body paint, Kim did a shoot wearing only paint so this is something I could link to both ideas. I looked at the way men also show off their body's in shoots. And finally looked at close up shots that could potentially suggest the model is naked or just natural.

At the moment I am being drawn to the body paint idea, purely because it's different, its versatile and could be fun when trying to link my brand to my word!
